Shadows is the festival that shows you the other Chinese films, independent films whose aesthetic was strongly affected by the age of digital technologies, films that unveil a country both fascinating and disturbing.
When independent Chinese filmmakers grab their DV cameras, they capture invisible images that are not allowed in the official audiovisual landscape, images that show, among other things, the breakup of rural communities, outcasts at the heart of towns and the young generation beset by doubt.
The aim of the Shadows Festival is to make you discover a completely different vision of the country, through films - new talents - that we brought back from the field.
During five days, from the 25th to the 29th of September, more than thirty exclusive films, from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Canton, Xi'an, Kunming etc, will be projected at the Voûtes.
The first edition of this biennial event will present the French audience and film professionals all types of films - fiction, documentary, and video - made over the past two years.
At the same time, this event will look back over Wu Wenguang’s work, the pioneer of the independent Chinese documentary, and Light Cone will be given carte blanche so they can present us a selection of their Chinese experimental films.
