:: focus on Wu Wenguang

Personal works :

Pioneer of Chinese documentary film in the late 80’s, Wu Wenguang is part of the contemporary art avant-garde movement in China. Self-taught, he is an acknowledged filmmaker and producer, and his films have a strong influence on new wave Chinese independent documentary. He is also one of the central figures of Beijing’s artistic and cultural scene. We render homage to him by presenting three of his personal works, as well as four films issued from the Village self-governance film project.

Village self-governance film project :

From May 22nd 2001 to May 28th 2006, the European Union and the People’s Republic of China have been creating an intergovernmental program whose objective is to promote the development and the democratic management of villages through educational acts.

Wu Wenguang leads the documentary section of this project, and has conceived of a project in three parts.

The first part consists of teaching ten “peasants” how to use a DV camera so that they can film the events and proceedings of the new type of election taking place in their own villages. Villagers’ documentary film is a patchwork film made with their images. The second part, Seen and heard is the making of this experiment, which addresses each apprentice director’s experience.

In parallel, Wu Wenguang invites ten young filmmakers to make their first film about the electoral proceedings in the village of their choice. We have selected to show the resulting films of Song Tian and Hu Min.
